Skopelos is an enchanting destination, loved both by Greeks and foreigners.
In recent years, after the big success of the film “Mamma Mia“, Skopelos has been turning into a popular international destination.
One of the unique characteristics of Skopelos is its lush nature. Being one of the greenest islands in the Aegean, Skopelos has maintained its natural purity. Its settlements blend harmoniously with their surroundings, especially the traditional settlements of Chora and Palaio Klima.
Skopelos has no airports, which contributes to the preservation of its traditional elements. However, there are some nearby airports you can use to get to Skopelos as long as there is a ferry connection with the island.
Skiathos International Airport
The closest airport to Skopelos is the Skiathos Airport Alexandros Papadiamantis (JSI) on the neighboring island of Skiathos. The airport serves domestic and international flights.
Skiathos Airport (JSI) is just 3 km away from Chora of Skiathos and the port. During the summer there are daily flights to and from Athens, which continue in winter but with a lower frequency. In summer, there are also flights to and from Thessaloniki.
Volos Airport
Nea Anchialos National Airport in Volos is the closest mainland airport to Skopelos.
The airport began operation in 1993. It is a modern airport that serves Central Greece with domestic flights and charter flights from many European cities.
In Nea Anchialos Airport there is a parking area. The airport lies 40 minutes from Volos Port. It is a good idea to book in advance your ferry tickets to Skopelos, especially in the summer.
Thessaloniki Airport
Thessaloniki Airport “Macedonia” (SKG) is located 15 km southeast of the city of Thessaloniki. It is the fourth-largest airport in Greece and is the main airport of Northern Greece. Apart from the city of Thessaloniki, it also serves the popular tourist destination of Chalkidiki and the surrounding cities of Central Macedonia. The bus line 78 connects the airport with the city’s new train station.
Thessaloniki International Airport serves domestic and international flights to and from European countries. The Athens–Thessaloniki route is the tenth busiest in the EU with 1.8 million passengers.
The easiest way to reach Skopelos from Thessaloniki is by taking the bus to Volos and then the ferry from Volos port to Skopelos.
Athens International Airport
Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) serves the largest number of flights in Greece. However, the trip from Eleftherios Venizelos to Skopelos is a bit more complicated than that from Thessaloniki.
The best option is to take a bus to the port of Mandoudi or Agios Konstantinos and from there the ferry to Scopelos. The port of Mantoudi operates all year round and the port of Agios Konstantinos only in summer.
